LIFE ENTIRE (December 12, 2011)

I have long loved a haiku by Kobayashi Issa that smacks of his love of insects: “First firefly, why turn away? It’s Issa!” Here, “first” refers to the season. In this case, spring. But now I have come across another spring haiku of his that smacks of love of crows: “First butterfly, before long some crow’s snack.” Together, the two haiku smack of Issa’s love of life entire.
