INFRASTRUCTURE (June 23, 2011)

Sofie Aller joined me for a drink on the hotel terrace this afternoon. At some point we started talking about my book. The mother of all blogs, that is. She was so enthusiastic about it that I was lost for words at first. She loves both my passion and my subtle humor. Most important, she feels that the book is a meeting place for people like her. “Infrastructure,” she said with a big smile. “That is,” she explained when she saw my blank face, “something that brings people together.” This is where she can find many people and places in Motovun, where she owns a house together with a couple of her Danish friends. When I mentioned to her that my project could be thought of as a commonplace book of old, I suddenly realized that she had a point. Indeed, it could also be thought of as a common place, too. A virtual commons of sorts. And Sofie’s startling word for it sums up this feature of my book pretty well.
