DISTURBING IMAGES (October 21, 2011)
Since about noon yesterday, images of the Libyan dictator just before or just after his execution come with all sorts of warnings across the World Wide Web. But I do not find them disturbing at all. Actually, the ecstasy of the executioners is salutary. As far as I am concerned, images of the Romanian dictator being executed two decades ago were not disturbing, either. Many a Roman emperor also died by the hands of soldiers and common people, and it is a pity that images of their executions are not available two millennia later. For they should remind every dictator of his or her most likely fate. The same holds for many a politician. The customary two terms is all a man or woman can live with before turning dictatorial bit by bit. Indeed, every politician should be made watch disturbing images of dictators executed by their ecstatic people before they take their lofty posts.
