BIRDHOUSE, SNAKEHOUSE (December 29, 2011)
Stuffing the birdhouse in my garden with stale bread is a special pleasure. I know it will be gone in a day or two. I used to throw the bread into the garden, but the birds must have been wary of eating it on account of the snakes that are thriving all over the Motovun hill. The birdhouse gives an advantage to those for whom the bread is intended, anyhow. It is quite high off the ground, and the pole supporting it is too smooth for a snake to climb. However, I have not yet seen a single bird go into the birdhouse. Either stuffed with bread or empty, it must be scary for most of them still. Most likely they grab a piece of bread and fly away with it as quickly as possible. They may even think of it as a snakehouse.
