A MATTER OF CHOICE (September 8, 2011)
Human stupidity is unlimited. And it is also universal. Still, Croatians are pretty good at it. Beliefs about the economic crisis among the Croatian politicians are the best gauge of its depth and breath. Bereft of economists worth the name, they are free to improvise. On one end, you have those who do not acknowledge any crisis. If it exists, it has nothing whatsoever to do with us. Period. Then there are those who believe that we have come out of the crisis already. Problem solved. On the other end, there are those who acknowledge the crisis, but offer a wide range of exit dates. Some believe that it is a question of months, if not days. Others assure anyone who wishes to listen that next year spells the end of hard times. Or the next. Lately, politicians like to claim that 2013 is the magical year. Of course, it coincides with Croatia’s entry into the European Union, a mixed blessing at best. The Union itself is up to its ears in all sorts of economic conundrums. Lacking any credible source of information about the economy, let alone about the crisis itself, all these opinions are up for grabs. Many politicians switch from one belief to another as they see fit. And often. Unlimited and universal as it is, human stupidity is a matter of choice in Croatia nowadays. A big step forward by comparison with bad old times, no doubt.
