Wolfgang Kulterer, a former chief executive of the Hypo Alpe Adria Bank from Carinthia in Austria, is going on trial tomorrow morning for all sorts of crimes regarding the bank’s activities in the country and abroad. According to the prosecutor, as many as sixty politicians from Austria and several neighboring countries were involved in a vast money-laundering scheme and much else besides. Croatia and Bavaria in Germany are specifically mentioned in a brief announcement I just found on the World Wide Web. And what a joy all this is for me! I know quite a number of Croatian culprits, all of whom have worked with the crooked bank in connection with golf development, especially along the Adriatic coast. For years, golf promised to be a real estate bonanza in this country, and especially in Istria, where a full third of golf courses were to be located. And I am looking forward to seeing them all in jail, where I hope they will rot for many years. Given widespread corruption in Croatian courts, the fact that Kulterer’s trial will take place in an Austrian court only adds to my joy. After so many years of misery, much of which has been rather personal, even a hint of justice can be intoxicating.
