The first anniversary of Croatia’s accession to the European Union is in the news. Sort of, but still. Although the newspapers from the Union are barely mentioning the solemn occasion, the newspapers from Croatia do have a few articles on the topic. After a full year, though, there is little anyone can boast about. Oh, I forgot one little thing that should not go unnoticed: Croatia now has its first European commissioner, who is concerned with consumer protection, of all things. Otherwise, the verdict is straightforward: Union, what Union? In the meanwhile, the so-called recession is entering its sixth year in Croatia…

Addendum (July 1, 2016)

I do not follow the news any longer, but it is still obvious that the third anniversary of Croatia’s accession to the European Union is kind of flat. Nay, insignificant. It is not a topic of conversation, either. Indeed, the title of this piece says it all. And this is how things are likely to remain for the foreseeable future. Union, what Union? It is only a question of years when it will break apart for good, anyhow.
