THE HANGING BELLY (July 1, 2014)
Ugliness in all its guises attracts me no end. I just spotted a man about my age with an amazing belly. Much of it was flat, but an enormous and lumpy bulge appeared just above his navel. The belly hung low and spilled well over his belt. A profusion of blubber protruded under his T-shirt and it swayed from side to side as he waddled. I could not but follow him around for a few blocks. Whenever he would stop to look into a shop window, which he did often to catch his breath, I would stop to watch that incredible belly. It took me a while to realize that he must be suffering from some sort of hernia. It appeared that his guts had spilled into the ample skin of his belly. When I came to the café where I was heading, I immediately checked this possibility on the World Wide Web. There are many kinds of hernia, but the man may well be suffering from one of them, whence the hanging belly. My curiosity satisfied, I looked around my table. Behold, one of the passersby was the man I spotted a while earlier! This time around, I felt kind of sorry for him. He must be in pain much of the time.
