TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF THE CALENDAR (September 1, 2014)
The weather is quite unseasonable, and thus I remind everyone I come across that this is to be expected for the first day of November. “September,” I am corrected by almost everyone. “Today is the first day of the ninth month,” I start, “right?” People nod in agreement. “Well” I continue with a professorial expression on my face, “November is the ninth month, as its very name shows.” If the confusion persists, I explain the names of the last four months of the year: “September is the seventh month, October is the eight month, November is the ninth month, and December is the tenth month, right?” And I explain the momentous error made by the hapless survivors after the fall of the Roman empire only to those who finally get the point (“The Roman Calendar,” November 18, 2008). Thanks to climate change, all is well now. As of late, we are about two months ahead of the calendar.
