TWO-HUNDRED TITS (September 6, 2014)

There is an expression about human nature in the Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian language that everyone in the Western Balkans has heard many a time: “Hundred people, hundred whims.” That is to say, we all differ in our ways. But there is a new expression in BCS to match the old one: “Hundred women, two-hundred tits.” It entices many a chuckle on first hearing. Although obviously derogatory toward women, it is told by quite a number of women, as well. And especially when they are talking about other women. I was thus stunned to see Laura Dodsworth’s new piece of art photography showing the torsos of a hundred naked women arranged into ten rows and as many columns. Two-hundred tits, to be sure. Some are large and some small, some are upright and some are drooping, and most right and left ones are unequal in size, but they are all tits and nothing but tits. Although the artist has a long story to tell, as is only natural at this day and age, it is too boring to read, let alone to attempt summarizing afterwards. At any rate, the art photograph goes quite perfectly with the BCS expression. And it is sure to be picked up by many across the Western Balkans.
