DIRE MEMORIES (September 7, 2014)

The weather is quite wonderful this morning. “Great,” I catch myself thinking while I am opening all the shutters, “it will be a joy to sit on the terrace in the afternoon.” But then I remember how it was yesterday. The day started pretty well, but it got cloudy before noon. It rained in the early afternoon, and it seemed it would remain cloudy and miserable through the evening. The sky opened up in the middle of the afternoon, though, and it was marvelous the rest of the day. “Hey,” I catch myself thinking again, “who knows how the rest of the day will look like!” And I decide to enjoy the good weather while it is good rather than make silly plans about the rest of the day. Which immediately reminds me of England. There, I learned to enjoy the good weather while it lasted. And that is how everyone around me behaved, as well. The habits acquired in England will serve me well with climate change, I figure. But the smile on my face gets kind of crooked quickly enough. Dire memories of English weather, to be sure.
