TITO’S BIRTHDAY (May 7, 2014)

Today is Tito’s birthday. There is not much about it in the Croatian newspapers, though. Croatian on his father’s side and Slovene on his mother’s, he was undoubtedly the only leader of South Slavs who has ever been more than a puppet of the surrounding empires. Following his breakup with Stalin, he was sovereign for true, as was former Yugoslavia at his helm. In spite of his many foibles, some of which are rather deplorable, he deserves better than silence. Much better, in fact. I only wonder when will Croatians, Slovenes, Bosnians, Serbs, Montenegrins, and Macedonians realize that they have never had a leader like Tito, and that they will never have such a leader again. Never, ever. Will it take them years, decades, or perhaps even centuries to come to their senses? Be that as it may, this day will surely be celebrated one day. And how. The birthday of the one and only true leader of the South Slavs minus Bulgarians.
