THE WORLD’S TALLEST BUILDING (November 11, 2014)

Quite by chance, I came across the world’s best tall buildings of 2014 on the World Wide Web. The annual list from the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in Chicago, Illinois, is dominated this year by Asia Pacific. A complex from Sydney, Australia, is the winner. It is heralded for its ecological ideas, no less. The winner is followed by a complex in Rotterdam, Netherlands; a building in Portland, Oregon; a building in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; a building in Hong Kong, China; a building in Huzhou, China; the refurbishment of the United Nations building in New York, New York; a building in Guayaquil, Ecuador; a building in Seoul, South Korea; a complex in Beijing, China; a building in Sydney, Australia; a complex in Bangkok, Thailand; a building in Singapore; a complex in Singapore; and a building in Osaka, Japan. Although none of the buildings and complexes on the list are to my taste, I am fascinated by the organization behind it. The Council was founded in 1969 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It moved to its present location in Chicago in 2003. The organization’s website offers a good deal of useful information, including the history of measuring tall buildings (www.ctbuh.org). The first building deserving special attention was built in New York at the beginning of the last century. Interestingly, the world’s tallest building has left the United States close to the end of the century. Right now, it is in Dubai. The world’s tallest building is worth watching in the future, for it offers a useful index of both wealth and pride. Where can we expect it next? And how much taller will it be than the last contender?
