One more referendum is in the news. This time it is Venice and its region, Veneto, that want to secede from Italy. Together with Venice, cities like Treviso, Vicenza, and Verona have had enough of Rome. Although there is no constitutional basis for such a referendum in Italy, it signals deep dissatisfaction with its politics. Besides, la Serenissima has more than a thousand years to its name, which makes it suitable for the exercise. Activists say that about two thirds of the population in the region are for secession. Although I am not a fan of splintering of this sort, I find myself surprisingly enthusiastic about the Venetian referendum. The bias comes straight from my Venetian roots, it goes without saying. My ancestors from my father’s side would surely vote for the return of the Venetian Republic without much thought. Italy was not close to their hearts. All things considered, I can already see a Venetian flag flying from my house in Motovun. Who knows, perhaps Istria will soon have a referendum to join Venice once again?
