“RUSSIANS VIE TO CARVE UP CRIMEAN SPOILS” (March 19, 2014)
Thus the Financial Times today. “Choices commercial assets being taken over by pro-Moscow forces,” elaborates the newspaper. This is hardly surprising, but it still shifts the focus mightily. Behind all those passions, however deep, there lie commercial interests. As well as loads of capital forever hungry for still more capital. And Russian capital must be among the toughest of them all. Disappointing? Nay, enlightening! When it comes to Eastern Ukraine, the situation cannot be all that different. The burning passions across the region notwithstanding, commercial interests are lurking from the background. Once again, this is hardly surprising, but it is worth keeping in mind when reading about the so-called crisis in Ukraine. Enlightening, or what?
