How will the so-called western civilization react to rampant climate change and the concomitant breakdown of society? The most prominent reaction will be the rampant increase in production, trade, and consumption of illegal drugs, such as Amphetamine-type stimulants, heroine, cocaine, and cannabis. Although the consumption of an increasing number of these drugs will be legalized in a number of western countries, some of them will remain illegal for a while. Unable to do anything about the ravages of climate change, an ever-larger number of people will turn to drugs. They will be perceived by the many as the ultimate solution to the rapid social breakdown. By and by, the distinction between legal and illegal drugs will become blurred. The western civilization will end in a drugged blur. With its demise, the production, trade, and consumption of drugs will first decline and then peter out. By that time, the breakdown of society will be nearly complete. The surviving communities will dwindle in size to between a tenth and a twentieth of the present numbers. The ultimate solution will become a taboo for many generations.
