THE MONOCULAR TELESCOPE (May 14, 2014)

As I am having my morning coffee at Marko’s, a busload of kids around the age of ten barges onto the lower square. There are a few teachers with them, but they are screaming at the top of their voices and dashing about like demented. The bora has been blowing pretty hard all night long, and the view of the Mirna valley is magnificent. The sea is shining blue in the distance. But all the kids rush to the monocular telescope by the flag post in the middle of the square, where a huge line forms in no time. Stunning as it is, the view is of no interest to them. They are all waiting for their turn at the toy, which was installed by the municipality some years ago. While they are in line, they are gabbing with each other excitedly. None of them casts a single look over the parapet of the square. Now, what would a Martian learn about the human species from the behavior of the kids on the lower square in Motovun?
