As I am sitting at Benjamin’s and gabbing with everyone around, I occasionally look up toward the television set mounted on the wall opposite the bar counter. As far as I can tell, it is a documentary about some place in Dalmatia where there are many Roman sculptures to be found. Among their many distinctive features are the missing noses. Nearly all the sculptures have been disfigured over the ages. Had the Roman sculptors been aware of the fate of their works, it crosses my mind at some point, they would have made them minus the noses, their most vulnerable parts. In the long run, a clean cut would have been the best solution. But then my mind wanders to the civilization of which I happen to be a part. To wit, what should we remove from our works ahead of time to avoid disfigurement in the future? It does not take me long to conclude that Romans are likely to end up well ahead of us. For what are the missing noses compared with the missing everything? I am thinking about the World Wide Web, it goes without saying. All it takes to disfigure it for good is to turn off the electricity. Lucky Romans, indeed.
