THE MISSING JET (April 14, 2014)
I have been missing for more than three weeks, and so many a waiter and waitress in Zagreb is delighted to see me again. “Where’ve you been?!” they ask. Each and every time I proceed with utmost seriousness. “I’ve been looking for the missing jet,” I answer. The waiters laugh. “They’re pulling it out now,” I conclude with a frown. Idiotic as my performance undoubtedly is, it is not only funny to the waiters, but it also obviates the need to mention my double life. Motovun, what Motovun? As for the missing jet, I hope it will be found soon. The joke would hardly work twice, and I will be leaving the Croatian capital again in just a few days.
