Corruption is in the news. Brussels says that corruption costs the European Union one-hundred and twenty-billion euros a year. Brussels also says that member states have failed to address conflicts of interest. Phew! Croatia is not alone! Far from it, too. Once upon a time, I thought that conflicts of interests were typical of Croatia, but I was wrong (“Croatia Spells Conflict of Interests,” October 3, 2008). It is actually the Union that spells conflict of interests. Live and learn. Croatia is in good company, at least. Among its own, as it were. In the fullness of time, it will learn many a good trick from other members of the Union. Apparently, there are tricks galore.
