One quick look at Croatia’s economy is enough to make you sick. The rough figures are simply staggering. The yearly output has dropped by more than a tenth over the last five years. More than a fifth of the labor force is unemployed. Among the young in the labor force, more than a half is unemployed. Of those employed, about a half work in the public sector, and most of them are in the administration. Public debt is rapidly reaching yearly output. About a half of the food consumed is imported. Tourism is the main economic sector, but the tourist season cannot be stretched beyond the six warm months. All other economic sectors beside trade are moribund. As a consequence, all the government’s promises that the economic situation will improve this year or the next sound hollow. There is no light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. The only surprise is that the streets and squares of Croatian cities are dead quiet. The fear of public unrest installed in everyone’s heart over half a century of so-called socialism is still in the air. Sincere thanks to comrade Tito! Unbeknownst to the hapless government, he is still at the helm.
