SO LUCKY (October 21, 2014)
In spite of my creaking bones and sleep disrupted by visits to the toilet, I am quite healthy for my age. Lucky bastard. But how much longer will I be so lucky?
Addendum I (October 22, 2014)
Well, how about my growing problems with constipation, difficulties with digestion after late meals, and especially if they include meat, and all sorts of problems with psoriasis and arthritis? Short as my haiku perforce must be, it is still long enough for a bit longer list of ailments typical of old age. Anyhow, the fact remains that I am quite healthy for my years. And this is where my haiku is true to life. How much longer, though? That is the key question, indeed. Crotchety as this addendum happens to be, it is still in support of the haiku. As well as my growing anxiety about the rickety years to come. Hey, should I add this nagging ailment to the growing list?
Addendum II (September 13, 2015)
Crotchety or not, the first addendum needs bringing up to date with an even more crotchety one. Namely, my blood test a couple of days ago showed that my prostate was not in the best of shapes. Over the years, the prostate specific antigen has shown a worrying upward trend. More to the point, the last test result was no less than alarming, for it was way above the recommended maximum. So much for my good health. The rickety years to come appear to be a bit closer than I have thought. In fact, they are right in front of my nose. Peekaboo!
Addendum III (October 2, 2016)
Well, well. My problems with constipation are gone by now. In fact, my stool is in perfect shape. Now that I have dropped dinners, and especially heavy ones, there are no problems with my digestion, either. Psoriasis is a bother, but it is largely under control. And so is arthritis, for I am exercising my fingers regularly. Although I have not had a blood test for quite a while, I can say that my prostate is not bothering me in any way. My sleep is occasionally disrupted by a visit to the toilet, but that is a minor glitch only. Besides, I am in a pretty good shape. I walk a lot, and my muscles work well. The same is true of my joints. My regular yoga practice helps a good deal, and especially with my spine. And so on, and so forth. As for the rickety years to come, I will do my best to keep them at bay for as long as I can. Amen.
