SCREW IT ALL (February 21, 2014)

Having first shat and then snacked, I go out for a drink. On my way through familiar streets and squares, I smile joyfully at everything in sight. Screw it all.

Addendum (February 22, 2014)

This was banged into my mobile phone in the Bulldog Pub after yet another brush with enlightenment. For I was truly joyful as I was walking through central Zagreb. More, I was nearly ecstatic. No matter what I saw on my way, including many a despicable face and dilapidated building, I kept smiling with conviction. I was as happy as happy can be. Having sat down and ordered my drink, I started looking for the last line of this haiku that would render my experience in words. “Fuckety fuck” was one of them. “Fuck the whole lot” was another. “Screw it all” came to me at last, and I went for it. All I wanted to say was that this horrible world was just fine with me at the time. Nothing about it bothered me in the least for quite a while. Say, five or six minutes. Out of the blue, everything struck me as hunky-dory. But I was still aware of the fact that this world was actually horrible. Monstrous, in fact. As well as that it cannot be otherwise. The brush with enlightenment changed my attitude toward everything in sight, though. The last line was thus directed at myself rather than the world itself. Things are as they are, and nothing can ever change them. Screw it all, silly old man, and keep smiling. That is all you can truly do, anyhow.
