MONTAIGNE AND PASCAL, AGAIN (February 21, 2014)
Now that I have Montaigne’s writings in Zagreb, as well, he is ricocheting through my mind quite often. And so is Pascal, but he is far behind Montaigne in this connection. Today I searched my Residua for all the pieces about the twain, and I came up with a couple of surprises. The first was a piece written after one of my visits to Belgrade, where I was presenting my two books published by Miša Jovanović. In many an interview, including one on television, I mentioned Montaigne and Pascal as my precursors (“Montaigne and Pascal,” May 27, 2003). The same piece offers some interesting statistics, too. Back then, Montaigne appeared in nineteen of my pieces, whereas Pascal appeared in eleven. I just revisited the website to see how things have changed in the intervening years. Montaigne now appears in thirty-three of my pieces, while Pascal trails with only fifteen. I would still claim both of them as my precursors, but the statistics show the difference between the two clearly enough. Come to think of it, perhaps I should get a copy of Pascal’s writings for my growing library in Zagreb?
