PROXY WARS GALORE (May 4, 2014)

By and by, the crisis in Ukraine is turning into civil war, as Putin has “predicted” not so long ago. And the civil war is turning into proxy war. Russian commandos have been prominent on the Ukrainian pro-Russian side from the start, but there are many indications by now that American mercenary companies are involved on the pro-Ukrainian side. It would thus not be surprising if American commandoes joined the fray pretty soon, albeit in special uniforms reserved for instructors. The new cold war is thus reminiscent of the old one. Proxy wars were among its hallmarks. Where could we expect the next one, though? Russia being so large, this is not an easy question. Come to think of it, how about the civil war in Syria, which is quite advanced by now? And how about the civil wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which have been smoldering for years? Looking farther afield, Kazakhstan is rather promising, as there are many Russians there. Well, what could be wrong with the two Koreas? Ah, perish the thought. Welcome to the new cold war!
