PIPELINES (May 4, 2014)

I have been collecting maps of pipelines for years. Oil and gas. It is amazing how many of them there are around the world. As well as how tangled they have become in places. Whence this interest in pipelines? Geopolitics, one of my foibles as of late. Much of geopolitics is about pipelines, too. Only take Eastern and Southern Ukraine as an example. As I write, Odessa is also in flames. In geopolitical terms, the mayhem is obvious enough. Add Moldova to the picture, and everything is perfectly clear. With these acquisitions in hand, Russia can pump oil and gas to Germany—sorry, the European Union—via Romania. This accomplished, the rest of Ukraine can go to hell. This can be accomplished by pipelines that cross the Black Sea, but it is usually cheaper and safer to go by land. Returning to maps of pipelines, much of interest will be taking place in the east. Russia and China will be the countries to watch. And the tangle of pipelines connecting the two will be amazing, indeed.
