ON WORD COUNTING (June 4, 2014)
Having penned my last haiku only a short while ago, I realized that I had not written any for quite a while. And so I went in search of the last one on record. To my amazement, it was written on April 21. This adds up to nearly two months. For some reason, I have turned away from my poetry of one-hundred and sixty characters including spaces as of late. Although I cannot be sure of the reason at present, it must have to do with my word-counting proclivities. The more, the better. One way or another, word counting is getting the better of me. In fact, the record of three-million words is uppermost in my mind the last few months. I want to reach it as soon as possible, which makes haiku kind of irrelevant. Each one of my poems adds only about thirty words to the pile. Not worth counting, that is. No matter how inane all this may sound, it still describes my proclivities pretty well. To my shame, albeit in vain. Alas, word counting is in my veins!
