ON THE CROATIAN LAW (October 21, 2014)

The Croatian law never ceases to amaze me. This morning I learned that the jailed mayor of Zagreb might remain on duty in spite of the legal proceedings against him. In fact, the position remains open to Milan Bandić all the way through the next elections in 2017 in spite of all the charges of corruption and organized crime. A similar thing happened with a governor of an important industrial region close to the Croatian capital a short while ago. Marina Lovrić Merzel is her name. The governor ended up in jail for corruption and organized crime, but the position remained open to her through next elections. The political cesspool that is Croatia is firmly based on law. And Croatian law is a pile of excrement generated during the war of independence. Franjo Tuđman, the Croatian president of the time, made sure that the excrement abundantly fertilized the new Croatia he was putting together with his closest associates. They were all destined to become rich and powerful in years to come. If there is any chance to change the Croatian law, it will take an enormous amount of time. The excrement and the cesspool are a perfect match.
