ON HOUSEHOLD CHORES (May 10, 2014)
Today I find myself preoccupied by all sorts of household chores. I started by washing some laundry. Hanging the laundry to dry on the terrace took a while. Soon afterwards, I took to removing weeds from the terrace walls. The many plants that find a foothold between rugged stones amaze me again and again. And this is the second time this year that I have taken care of the terrace walls. Feeling chipper, I went through the kitchen drawers in search of things to throw away. They get filled with crap in no time. All these chores behind me, I started thinking about the next one. Kitchen floor is a mess, for instance. And so is the bathroom floor. Instead for going for the bucket and sweeper, though, I stopped to reflect on the burst of energy that flooded me unexpectedly. There are household chores galore, but I am rarely attracted to them. What the hell is going on? Luckily, it took me but a few seconds to solve the riddle: my writing is going nowhere today. Whence the sudden attraction of household chores, of course. They are but substitutes. Chances are that this is their very substance across the board. When in doubt, turn to household chores. And there is no limit to what you can do around the house.
