NOT AN EASY SUBJECT (November 18, 2014)

I am sitting at Benjamin’s with Rudi Handjal. The anniversary of the fall of Vukovar in eastern Slavonia is on television. Rudi joined the fighting as a volunteer soon afterwards. A priest is talking on television about the need to forgive. “God can forgive,” Rudi says quietly, “but I simply can’t!” The best I can do is to keep mum, for I know this is not an easy subject for him. “I saw a woman nailed to a wooden fence, her stomach cut open, and her unborn child nailed next to her,” he says. “It’s amazing what humans can do to each other,” I say quietly after a pause. Rudi keeps mum. Not an easy subject for anyone, to be sure. God cannot possibly forgive, either.
