“JUNCKER FACES CENSURE VOTE” (November 18, 2014)

Thus The Guardian today. “European Union chief’s actions as prime minister of Luxemburg attacked over alleged rôle in creation of tax haven,” elaborates the newspaper. The attack is coming from the European parliament, where far-right and anti-Union members are conspiring to collect enough support for a motion of censure, which must be debated and voted on as soon as next week. The conspirators claim that Jean-Paul Juncker was directly responsible for the tax scams that saved the multinationals billions and deprived other Union countries of tax revenue. This he achieved over two decades during which he dominated politics in the Grand Duchy. Interestingly, the disclosures of the Luxemburg tax shenanigans came only four days into Juncker’s five-year term as Commission president. Although the European parliament has acted swiftly on these disclosures, the question is how it is possible that they were not made during his candidacy for the post, which was quite a protracted process. In fact, it appears that the conspirators waited for this precious moment so as to destabilize the Union itself, in which case Juncker is but a collateral victim. If this is indeed the case, congratulations all around. With such clever tactics, the far-right and anti-Union members of the European parliament are well on the way of reaching their goal. The parliamentary motion to disband the Union may well follow in just a few short months.
