LIKE NEW (July 14, 2014)

I just bumped into Danilo Balaban on the lower square, and I thanked him for his advice regarding alcohol consumption (“Too Much Alcohol,” June 15, 2014). I told him that I had cut it in half since our last meeting, and that my stomach was much better for it. “The bloating is nearly gone,” I grinned happily. “The thing to do now is to stop drinking altogether for about a month,” he said without even cracking a smile. “Once your organism regains its balance, you can return to drinking, but only moderately.” I agreed with him, but I told him that I was not yet ready for such a big move. “The sooner, the better,” he raised his eyebrows. And then he added that an additional problem with the wines I could find in Motovun was their age. “Remember,” he said, “young wines are much more acidic than old ones, and that only makes it worse for your stomach.” To round it off, he mentioned that it would be best to avoid white wines from now on. “Too acidic by half,” he concluded with a frown. Once again, I agreed with him at once. His advice strikes me as just right. All I have to do now is follow it without much ado. With some physical exercise, which he also recommends, I will be like new by the end of the year. Hooray!
