KNOW MEDITATION, KNOW LIFE (October 21, 2014)

Thus a graffito on the wall of a church right next to Dolac, the main open market in Zagreb. And in English. It has been there for quite a few years, and it has puzzled me ever since I have first spotted it. In particular, what does the author mean by “life”? For me, meditation is the absence of any thought or image leading to thought. If anything of this sort starts shaping in my mind while I am meditating, I cut it short at once with my mantra. Thus, meditation is sheer blankness. Sheer nothingness. Complete and total void. And I relish it precisely as such. Day by day, I do my best to rid my mind of all thought no matter how astute and auspicious. As far as I understand, this is what meditation is all about in many different traditions. Most important, the stilling of the mind is the goal of yoga. Returning to the graffito, is this what the author means by “life”? If so, my heartfelt congratulations. Otherwise, my most sincere condolences.
