JUST LIKE A BABY (February 26, 2014)

One of several women in their late teens or early twenties at a neighboring café table is so loud that I cannot but “overhear” what she is saying. “My boyfriend is twenty-two,” she exclaims after a brief mobile-phone conversation, “but he knows absolutely nothing about banking!” According to her, he is given to many strange ideas about it. But the essentials escape him entirely, as well. For instance, he knows nothing about interest on money deposited with a bank. And he knows nothing about interest charged on money taken on credit. “Just like a baby,” she repeats a few times in desperation and spreads her arms wide. The other women at her table just nod their heads. Their silence says a great deal, too. All men are just like babies, that is. At this stage of their lives, not even the innocence about banking surprises them any longer. The conversation quickly turns to more interesting subjects, and the loud one among them falls silent. Just like a baby, I decide to record what I have learned from the neighboring table. Nowadays, even the youngest among women are pretty savvy about banking. What is more, they know a lot about interest.
