In spite of all my kidding about the snow, it is a joy to witness it today. It is the first this year. It snowed in late November a whole month before the winter officially started, but this is the first snow I have witnessed this winter proper (“The First Snow,” November 20, 2013). At any rate, it is a joy to watch the snow falling and twirling and drifting. It is too light and wet to pile up, but many of the roofs in central Zagreb are getting a white veneer by now. The snow is not expected to last until tomorrow, but it is forecast to return in less than a week. For the time being, I make sure to stop and watch the snow every now and then. As always, I find it mesmerizing when it is defying gravity and drifting upwards in the breeze. A bit sentimentally, I worry about the day when all this will stop, and I will remember the last snow with a tear in my eye. The tear is already lying in wait, it appears.
