Randal Olson is in the news. He is a computer science graduate research assistant at Michigan State University who has recently produced a map of the top autocomplete words for each country in Europe. The autocomplete function can be found on many browsers, but he used Google, which has become the mother of all browsers. The form he used is as follows: “Why is [country] so…?” The function replaces the ellipsis with the most common word used on the browser. This sort of exercise produces stereotypes about countries in the brackets. So, Germany is “rich,” Finland is “smart,” and Italy is “racist.” Interestingly, most countries in Eastern Europe are recognized as “poor.” This also holds for most countries that came into being after the breakup of former Yugoslavia. Croatia is recognized as “beautiful,” though. What is more, it is the only European country recognized as such. Given the hoopla about Olson’s map of Europe, Croatia got pretty lucky. The next tourist season is only behind the corner, too. The truth be told, Croatia is indeed beautiful. As stereotypes go, this one is right on the money.
