CHAPTER 23 AND CHAPTER 24 (January 21, 2014)

This is a special day for Serbia and the entire Balkans. It can only be hoped that the country’s accession to the European Union will not take as long as Croatia’s. Nine years! But it is interesting to read that Stafan Füle, the Union’s commissioner for enlargement has warned the Serbian officials assembled in Brussels for the happy occasion to pay special attention to two chapters of the accession charter: Chapter 23 and Chapter 24. The first concerns the judiciary and fundamental rights, and the second covers justice, freedom, and security. He added that Croatia had serious problems with these particular chapters. This is hilarious to read more than six months after the Croatia’s accession to the Union. The past tense is no less than ridiculous, indeed. Chances are that Croatia will have serious problems with the same two chapters even after Serbia’s accession to the Union.
