BYE-BYE MARIUS (February 10, 2014)

Marius the giraffe is in the news. Eighteen-months old, it was deemed to be useless by the experts at the Copenhagen zoo. The fear of inbreeding was the main argument against it, it appears. It was thus shot and dissected in public, and then its parts were fed to the lions at the same zoo. And all this in spite of an international petition of nearly thirty-thousand signatures, numerous local protests, as well as offers by several zoos to rehouse the creature. “Bye-bye Marius,” the cry now ricochets around the World Wide Web. But it is amazing to see articles about the giraffe’s end in so many newspapers of international renown. “Disturbing images,” they caution gingerly. And the images are indeed disturbing. Imagine, lions eating a giraffe! What is more, they also show that many schoolchildren witnessed the ordeal from close up. The horror.
