BODY FAT (June 6, 2014)
As of late, there are ever more Asian tourists in Motovun. The Japanese came first. They were followed by Koreans. And there is a growing number of Taiwanese now. Tourists from the People’s Republic of China are sure to follow in ever-larger numbers. I can tell them apart mainly by clothing. The Japanese are most conservative and the Chinese are all over the place. The Chinese are much more friendly, as well. Often enough, they seem to be quite eager to establish some sort of communication. But there is one thing that distinguishes the Asians from the Europeans and Americans, who come to the hilltown in numbers: body fat. At this time, there are hardly any obese people among the Asians, whereas their number is rather staggering among the Americans and Europeans. Americans lead to roost in body fat. I cannot but wonder how many years will it take until the Asians, too, start getting fatter and fatter. In about a decade or two, Americans, Europeans, and Asians will be all the same in terms of obesity, I would guess. Slowly but surely, the American diet is spreading around the world.
