APPALLED BY SCOTTISH INDEPENDENCE (September 2, 2014)

The British pound has plummeted today against the dollar and the euro. The drop was so pronounced that I immediately searched for its cause. It did not take me long to find out that it had to do with Scottish independence. The latest opinion poll of the electorate shows that the gap between those who intend to vote for and against independence has suddenly narrowed. As of today, it is only six percent. Even though those who are expected to vote against it are still in the majority, the referendum a fortnight from today is pretty uncertain. Obviously enough, Britain minus Scotland would be so much smaller as an economic power to warrant an appreciable drop in the pound’s purchasing power across the globe. Once again, I discover a link between world affairs and myself a bit late in the game. To wit, Scottish independence would lower the value of my British pensions considerably in terms of the euro, to which the Croatian kuna is tied pretty closely. Live and learn. Come to think of it, there cannot be any world event that does not have an effect on my own wellbeing, but the connection is rarely as palpable as in this case. In fact, it can be calculated to every pound and penny lost. Of course, I cannot but be appalled by Scottish independence.
