ANA’S SOCKS, AGAIN AND AGAIN (September 3, 2014)
It got so cold last night that I put on my woolen socks in the middle of the night. And I fell asleep again in no time. I bought them from Ana Krnjus years ago, and they have served me well ever since (“Ana’s Socks,” October 19, 2006). They were meant for the winter, but this is a funny notion nowadays. The last time I got surprised by wearing them out of season was the spring only a couple of years ago (“Ana’s Socks, Again,” May 19, 2012). The seasons have gotten jumbled, to be sure. One thing I know for sure is that I now need warm socks even in the summer. Is this old age, though? There is no question that I am getting longer in the tooth, which may contribute to my yearning for comfort at night, but the weather is undoubtedly funny. The temperature in my house has dropped from twenty-three degrees Celsius three days ago to twenty degrees this morning. This is unusual for this time of the year, to be sure. Central heating will be needed soon enough. And I have been wearing my winter clothing the last few days, as has everyone else in Motovun. Everyone is bundled up, and especially in the evening. One way or another, global warming is a most confusing notion.
