Anti-homeless studs are in the news. About an inch tall and a foot apart, they look formidable on photographs I came upon on the World Wide Web. They have been installed at a London residential block recently to deter rough sleepers. Apparently, they are popping up all over the city. Critics say that homeless people are now treated like vermin, such as pigeons. According to an expert, rough sleeping has risen by thirty-six percent nationally over the last three years. Over the same period, it has risen by seventy-five percent in London. More than six-thousand people slept rough in London last year. Wow! I understand the outrage at the studs, but I am a bit confused about the treatment of pigeons, as well. Are studs, spikes, and similar pointed devices okay in their case? To the best of my knowledge, nobody has complained about deterrents of this ilk to date. But pigeons are also homeless. And they are not vermin, either. Anyhow, the news of anti-homeless studs made me feel so much closer to pigeons.
