ABOUT BRANCHING (April 1, 2014)

It is a joy to sit under a tall tree, look toward the sky, and watch the whole crown sway in the wind. The thicker the branches, the less they move. The movement of the thinnest branches is thus of little interest. Given the direction of the wind, it is quite predictable, as well. But the movement of the thickest branches is something entirely different. It is so slight that every visible movement is outright thrilling. The result of the movement of so many smaller branches all the way up the crown, it is also rather unpredictable, as well as surprising. But the trunk of a tall tree appears immobile no matter how long one watches it even in the strongest of winds. Is it because its movement is so slight that it cannot be perceived by the naked eye, or do the movements of all the branches coming out of it cancel themselves out? A combination of the two, no doubt, but every tree that manages to grow tall must have branches whose movement cancels each other out, and especially when the wind is strong. Would that humans learned a thing or two about branching from good old trees.
