A PERSONAL PHILOSOPHER (January 27, 2014)
It was rather late yesterday evening when I mentioned the IT threat to my beloved (“The IT Threat,” January 24, 2014). I started with what I had read about the disappearance of a wide range of jobs, then I turned toward the stubborn unemployment statistics in both America and Europe, and I wrapped up the story with the need for a new working class. But my beloved quickly turned the whole story toward a growing army of personal aids, personal coaches or trainers, personal yoga instructors, personal dieticians, and the like. The affluent want personal care nowadays, and this new demand is being met by many people who are willing and able to supply it. “As far as I am concerned,” I quipped at some point, “perhaps I could only serve as a personal philosopher.” Judging by my beloved’s cackle, though, this particular brand of personal assistance is not ever likely to be in high demand. Thus I dropped the subject. We wrapped up our conversation and headed for the bedroom soon afterwards.
