A MANUAL ON HUMAN BEHAVIOR (October 11, 2014)
Over our morning coffee in one of our favorite Zagreb cafés, we are talking about some events that took place while we were apart. “Ah,” I conclude at some point, “what we need is a manual on human behavior.” Based on credible information, it would offer guidance on what to expect from humans under a wide range of circumstances. “It would show that race, religion, wealth, and the like have nothing to do with the basic characteristics of the species,” I add. When I start enumerating these characteristics, many of which are outright appalling, my beloved interrupts me. “Let’s go to the store before lunch,” she says. “We need a whole bunch of things.” She knows well enough what I think of humans. And she is tired of my tirades about the need for yet another hundred-thousand years of evolution at least. I follow her without a word, but the manual is still ricocheting around my mind. Alas, it would take a Martian to write it!
