“TO LEAVE OR NOT TO LEAVE CROATIA” (February 20, 2014)

Thus blares one of the leading Croatian newspapers on its front page today. As it reports, entrepreneurs are now fervently debating Hrvoje Prpić’s recent public decision to leave the country, as well as to worn entrepreneurs abroad to stay away (“Stay Away from Croatia,” February 17, 2014). Two pages are dedicated to the vaunted debate, which ends up predictably enough. One page is given to those who wish to leave, and another to those who do not wish to leave. The former bewail excessive bureaucracy, and especially the punitive tax authorities, while the latter explain that one must learn the laws and regulations of the country in which one operates. The latter also hint at the love of the country, the wish to help it along, and the like. Patriotism, in short. What the newspaper fails to do is to look into the statistics, though. How many companies have left the country since Croatia’s accession to the European Union? Why have they left? Where have they gone? How are they fairing in their new environments? And so forth. Perhaps this is too much to ask from a leading Croatian newspaper. None of them would ever leave the country, anyway.
