“DICTATORSHIPS AND CHAOS GO HAND IN HAND” (October 10, 2014)
Thus Der Spiegel today. “The argument that a stable, autocratic state is better than a failed one has become increasingly fashionable,” elaborates the newspaper. “But it misses the fact that autocracies are ultimately the source of that chaos.“ This is clearly in response to yesterday’s article on the same theme (“Are Dictators Worse than Anarchy?” October 9, 2014). In the long run, the new article argues, functioning democracies are more stable than dictatorships. The idea that dictatorships foster stability is a fairytale, the article concludes. “When the war broke out in former Yugoslavia in the 1990s.” an example is provided, “some became nostalgic for the former dictator, Tito, in the belief that he had managed to hold together the multi-ethnic state.” They were wrong, of course. Dictatorship leads to chaos in the long run. Anyhow, the second article on the theme of dictatorship and stability is much closer to my heart than the second one, but the first one is much more likely to win the day. Dictatorship is in the air across Europe. The only question is who will push for it first.
