THE MYSTERIES (September 28, 2009)

“Well,” started my lawyer in his inimitable crackling voice as soon as I picked up the phone an hour or so ago, “the court hearing this Friday has been postponed once again.” When I mumbled my surprise after an awkward pause, he asked me how I felt about the whole thing. “Sometimes I feel like coming out for a big fight,” I said quietly, “and sometimes I feel like crawling into a deep hole.” “Keep fighting out of court,” he chuckled, “but leave the court to me.” And that was that, almost a year into my initiation into the mysteries of Croatian jurisprudence.
