SUICIDE, HOMICIDE (April 15, 2009)
Every day I skim through a dozen or so online newspapers, most of which are British or American, with one or two French or German newspapers thrown in for good measure. In one of them I just stumbled upon a story about one-thousand and five-hundred farmers from an Indian province who have committed mass suicide because of crop failure. They were in debt to moneylenders, who had lured them to take money. Falling water levels are the main cause of crop failure, though. And water levels have been falling for several years in a row. But what is the first thought that comes to my mind upon reading this story? Not too many people around the world are like these poor Indians. As global warming takes hold, most of them will go for homicide instead. Before long, they will arm themselves, join growing bands, and start searching for places where water levels are higher. Shortly there will be many a story about their fortunes in the online newspapers I am accustomed to reading.
