ROOTING FOR THE WINTER (September 27, 2009)
It is a quiet Sunday morning. The weather is balmy. I am having coffee at the hotel terrace, which is bathing in sunlight. Completely alone, I am enjoying the peace under the chestnut trees. And then two busloads of Croatian highschool kids barge into the upper square. They are perfectly well behaved, but there are a hundred of them nonetheless. Soon afterwards, two busloads of Italian pensioners stagger into the upper square, as well. When they start yelping and shrieking, the kids join them in a jiffy. Pandemonium. I pay my coffee as quickly as I can and rush home. Having slammed the front door behind me, I lock it with zeal. The unseasonably warm weather is a godsend for all those who make their living from tourism, but I am already rooting for the winter. Ah, the freezing winds! The torrential rains! The startling blizzards!
